This portrait of power and terror is infused with complexity by Eisenstein's artistry and perspective. Although his ascent to the heights of world power was made possible by a communist revolution, Stalin used the images of Russian monarchs to demonstrate his ambitions for his own autocracy. In Ivan the Terrible, Part I, Stalin tasked Sergei Eisenstein with depicting the kind of terror that Stalin was in the midst of inflicting. The tension between Stalin's agenda and Eisenstein's artistry resulted in a complex and fascinating film. Programming Series Fellows: -Zukhra Kasimova, Assistant Professor of History -Lenora Murphy, Assistant Teaching Professor of Russian Studies -Amanda Wooden, Professor of Environmental Studies & Sciences The film screening is sponsored by the Bucknell Humanities Center and the Bucknell University Film and Media Studies Program.
